The mode of action of Shiatsu can be explained as well in physiological terms or with the energetic japanese theory.

  • From a physiological standpoint, the rythm of pressuring specific points allows both rebalancing the functioning of the autonomic nervous system and esing the circulation of body fluids. In addition there is a release of certain substances in the body. This results in a lessening of pain, a better functioning of the cardiac, respiratory and digestive systems and a feeling of well-being.

  • In terms of energy, as understood by traditional Asian medicine, Shiatsu works on the channels through which the Qi flow (meridians) in order to help good circulation of this energy.

When the energy in the body is unbalanced, symptoms appear. When this energy is flowing freely, the symptoms lessen.

This energy follows a cycle of transformations, whose steps (movements or elements: water, wood, fire, earth, metal) have special characteristics. These are associated with bodily functions, ports, emotions, seasons, flavors ... Each meridian belongs to a movement. All of these signs allow to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative imbalances of energy, therefore the circulation in the meridians. By direct action on the meridians, and with access to tsubos (acupuncture points), it is possible to regulate the cycle of transformation.
